Historia Polskiej Szkoły w Houston
Początki i założenie szkoły
The Polish School named after the Nicolaus Copernicus in Houston was founded on March 20 th, 1982, thanks to the initiative of Mike Lesniewicz and the the involvement of Ewa Chmiel and Marzena Rudnicka. School's first headquarters was in the Polish House in northern part of Houston. In the first year of its operation, the school had 17 students – children of Polish emigrants – and three teachers: Stanislaw Siwek, Agnieszka Kuszakiewicz and Magdalena Bobrowska.
Years 1982-2011
In the 1982/1983 school year, the school already had 26 students and two teachers: Teresa Rozewicz and Andrzej Wedrychowicz. Over the following years, the number of students ranged from 26 to 55 children, and the school directors were, among others: Elzbieta Winiarska (1995-2005) and Aneta Krozel (2005-2010).
Moving to a new building
Thanks to the involvement of parishioners and the increase in the number of Poles, in 2011 the school moved to a newly constructed building belonging to the Parish of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Houston. The parish priest at that time was Fr. Waldemar Matusiak, who also served as the school’s principal until 2017.
Present time activities
Currently, the school is an eight-class institution that operates on Saturdays and has approximately 100 students and 11 teachers. The school principal is Hanna Tomaszkiewicz, and the parish priest is Fr. Tadeusz Rusnak. Each class is taught by qualified teachers.
